And the red man went gold!
Regular readers will recall this post about a 90 second film made by my sister Ruth being entered in competition in the UK. Well the judging was this weekend, and she won!Somewhat surprisingly, she came second in the audience vote category (which means someone spent a lot of time online voting for their movie on the depict website.) but she won the main critics award, which is the important one. Congratulations Ruth!

Thanks Aliette, I really think it is an excellent piece of film. It's only 90 seconds long but it's extremely well shot and there is a clear narrative, complete with an action scene. There is even enough characterisation that when the rollarblader picks up the old woman, and he starts to smile, there is an emotional connection. That's a lot for 90 seconds!
Anyway, I also lifted the following text from the depecit website, which has now been updated with the announcement:
"After much deliberation, we are now delighted to announce that the winner of the DepicT! '06 Award went to 'And The Red Man Went Green' by Ruth Meehan. The DepicT! '06 Animation Award was given to 'Flighty' by Leigh Hodgkinson. Special mentions were also given to 'Pemba' by Marc Hilltout and Pascal Colson and 'Big On Love' by Joseph Pierce. Award-winning director and long-standing Festival Patron Damien O'Donnell presented the Awards on Sat at Encounters Festival which took place at Watershed in Brisol. Both winners won a £2,000 each cash prize and 1-year membership to LOVEFiLM.com
A big thank you to the judges this year which included award-winning director and long-standing festival patron Damien O'Donnell, David Sproxton (Executive Chairman of Aardman Animations), Rod Stoneman (Director of the Huston School of Film & Digital Media), Chris Shepherd (Director/Writer, Slinky Pictures), Gina Fucci (Project Manager, Films@59), Myriam Thyes (DepicT! 2005 Winner) and lat but not least Mark Cosgrove (Head of Programming at Watershed and Creative Director of Encounters Short Film Festival). Their brief was to uncover distinctive voices - originality, imagination, and the ability to engage the audience with a compelling idea told in a mere 90 seconds."
